James Hutton.

James Hutton was an early geologist, He's even called the "Father of modern geology"

He was born in Scotland on the 14th of June in 1726. He was one of five children of a merchant who was Edinburgh City Treasurer, who sadly, died when James was still young.
James' mother insisted that he get and education at the Edinburgh High school, where he was mainly interested in Math and science. He then attended the University of Edinburgh when he was 14.

Hutton inherited from his father the Berwickshire farms of Slighhouses, a lowland farm which had been in the family since 1713, and the hill farm of Nether Monynut. In the early 1750s he moved to Slighhouses and set about making improvements, introducing farming practices from other parts of Britain and experimenting with plant and animal husbandry. He recorded his ideas and innovations in an unpublished treatise on The Elements of Agriculture.

This developed his interest in meteorology and geology. In a 1753 letter he wrote that he had "become very fond of studying the surface of the earth, and was looking with anxious curiosity into every pit or ditch or bed of a river that fell in his way”. Clearing and draining his farm provided ample opportunities. Playfair describes Hutton as having noticed that “a vast proportion of the present rocks are composed of materials afforded by the destruction of bodies, animal, vegetable and mineral, of more ancient formation”.

His theoretical ideas began to come together in 1760. While his farming activities continued, in 1764 he went on a geological tour of the north of Scotland with James Clerk Maxwell, ancestor of the famous James Clerk Maxwell.

Across the wide river.

Across the wide river is a story about The Rankin family, Lowry Rankin specifically.

The Rankins lived in Tennessee in the 1800's when slavery was still a very big problem. Lowry's father was John Rankin, an abolition minister.
The book is based on actual events and an obviously actual family, but it still mostly fiction.

In the beginning of the book, Lowry thinks everything in Kentucky is great and had only seen the "alright" side of slavery, that was until he was going to bible school with his friend Sherwood, who just happened to be a slave. after the lesson, Sherwood went outside so Lowry and his father could talk, and then they heard screams. Someone who had a problem with Sherwood learning had whipped him. That would be the beginning of Lowry seeing the bad side of slavery.

After all this, they Rankins made the decision to move across the river into Ohio the to the town of Ripley.
They lived in town for a while, but they didn't really like it, so John Rankin bought some land on top of a hill and built a house for them.

Lowry started school, and got bullied for his accent, so for the next few years, he didn't talk much outside of his home. One girl stood up for him though. Her name was Amanda Kephart. It was love at first sight for him.

Little did Lowry know, his parents had become involved in the underground (Underground railroad). That was, at least, until a slave came to his house looking for someone to take him to the next house.
From then on, he was involved with the underground railroad.

As Lowry grew up he wanted to be a carpenter. He even had a little internship with his uncle for a while. But as the issues with slavery got worse, He decided he wanted to be an abolition minister. So he went to Cincinnati to Lane seminary. Even there though, he had to transport slaves. With all the school, late nights taking slaves to safety, poor nourishment and whatnot, he got sick and had to leave to go back home.

After that he gave up on being a minister for a while and just focused on being a carpenter again.

After a series of events, Lowry saved more slaves, got the girl and would eventually become a name synonymous with abolition.

Snicker doodles. You need,

• Cookie dough
• Snickers

You gotta preheat the oven to what ever the package of cookies says.

Then you gotta put a snicker in the cookie (me and my mom usually cut it in half so it'll fit)
and then smoosh the dough around the snicker so it's all covered and then repeat til ya got all the cookies done. then put them in the oven for however long your cookie directions says.

Easy right? yep. ^_^

Indian Steps Museum.

Last Thursday, my mom and I went to this small museum called Indian Steps museum.
(the way Indian Steps got its name was, back a few hundred years, Indians that lived along the Susquehanna carved steps into the rocks along the river, that were footholds to make fishing easier. these steps have been underwater for quite some time though.)
Indian Steps museum was started by a man named John E. Vandersloot.

He found the area when he was on an outing with his friends. He instantly loved the property and bought it.

While he was gardening, he would find arrow heads, stone tools, pottery and other little pieces of artifacts. He also collected artifacts that his neighbors would share with him. After a while, he had quite a large collection. During the construction of Vandersloot's cabin (which is now the museum building) he had more then 10,000 of the artifacts embedded into the stones to form designs, like birds, animals, reptiles and to tell the story of the Indians that had lived there.

When Vandersloot died in 1936, his property was acquired by Pennsylvania Water & Power Company, owner-operator of the hydro power plants at Holtwood, three miles down the stream. In 1939, the company leased the estate to the Conservation Society of York County, founded in 1922. In 1955 Pennsylvania Power and Light Company bought the assets of the former company, and on December 3, 1956, PP & L presented the estate to the Society for the payment of 'one dollar.'


It's very unlikely that Vandersloot thought that anything would come from his hobby, let alone a whole museum. But I'm sure he would be glad that everything is being kept for people to see and learn about.
You can tell, by the inscription that is carved into a stone above the doorway to enter the museum that says :
"I entreat all those who pass this way to safely guard and preserve these former possessions of and monuments to an ancient Indian people.

John Edward Vandersloot,
Owner and Builder, Indian Steps Cabin, 1912"

Matthew Fontaine Maury

Born : 1806
Died : 1873

Maurys ancestry can be traced back to 15th century france.
His grandfather (reverend James Maury) was a teacher to 3 future U.S. presidents: Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Munroe.
He was born in Virgina, but then moved to Tennessee when he was five.
He wanted to be in the navy like his older brother John Minor Maury, but when he caught yellow fever and after fighting pirates while an officer in the U.S. Navy, and died from it, his father forbade Matthew to join. He eventually joined anyway though.
When a leg injury left him unable for duty at sea, Maury spent his time studying  navigation, meteorology, winds, and currents. His hard work on and love of plotting the oceans paid off when he became Superintendent of the Naval Observatory and head of the Depot of Charts and Instruments. Here Maury studied thousands of ships' logs and charts. He published the Wind and Current Chart of the North Atlantic, which showed sailors how to use the ocean's currents and winds to their advantage and drastically reduced the length of ocean voyages. Maury's uniform system of recording oceanographic data was adopted by navies and merchant marines around the world and was used to develop charts for all the major trade routes.

Alright so i just started a new homeschool group, and my first assignment is to write a short paragraph on myself.

so here we go,

Hey I am Hannah Detweiler, I am 15 years old, and I live in new providence, PA. I love dancing, drawing, painting, music and hanging out with my friends. My favorite movies are Moulin rouge, Ferris Buellers day off and Napoleon Dynamite. I have been homeschooled my whole life, along with my older sister and brother. My favorite baseball team is the Phillies, and I dont understand anything about football, but I still like the Steelers.

So there we are, a little insight into myself :)

Wuthering Heights

Wuthering Heights is a sort of a confusing story. Alot of it is a story being told inside of the story. But i'll get to that in a moment. First of all, the name you must know is Lockwood. He is the one that goes to Wuthering Heights, and is the one that the story inside the story is told to. He rents a manor named Thrushcross Grange, in England. He then meets his landlord, Heathcliff, a rich man who lives in the old manor named Wuthering Heights. In which he also meets a woman named Cathrine and a man named Hareton. They are all very cross, rude and not very sociable. So as soon as Lockwood can, He leaves Wuthering Heights and goes back to Thrushcross Grange. But to do that he had to travel through a terrible snow storm, thus, getting sick. Once back at the Grange, he asks his house keeper, Nelly Dean, if she knows anything about Heathcliff and everyone at the Heights. Turns out, she was their maid when they were younger. So she tells him her story. Heathcliff was taken in by Mr. Earnshaw, owner of Wuthering heights. Mr. Earnshaw had two children, Hindley, and Cathrine [which the aformentioned Cathrine was named after]. But Mr. Earnshaw grew to like Heathcliff better then his own son, which made Hindley act out and was terrible to Heathcliff. Although, Cathrine became best friends with Heathcliff and not too long after he came, they were inseperable. When they grow up, Earnshaw send Hindley away to college, but keeps heathcliff near him....Three years later, Mr. Earnshaw died, and Hindley inherited Wuthering Heights. He came back with a wife named, Frances. As soon as Hindley arrives he tries to get some revenge on Heathcliff for being His fathers favorite. Hindley makes Heathcliff work in the fields. But Heathcliff is still close friends with Cathrine. One night they go to Thrushcross Grange to tease Edgar and Isabella Linton. While there, Cathrine is bitten by their dog, and stays there to heal. By the time she comes home, she has developed feeling for Edgar, hence complicating hers and Heathcliffs relationship. Later, Hindleys wife Frances, dies after giving birth to a boy, which they named Hareton. Hindley become an alcoholic, and leaves Hareton in the care of Nelly. Hindley become worse and worse, and treats Heathcliff absaloutly terribly. Eventually, Cathrine, wanting to boost her social status, becomes engaged to Edar Linton, even though she loves Heathcliff. Heathcliff runs away for three years, and comes back just a little while after Cathrine and Edgar are married. He immediatly wants some revenge on all those who did him wrong, so he lends Hindley money, knowing it would deepen Hindleys debts. After Hindley dies, Heathcliff inherits Wuthering Heights, and marries Isabella Linton to put himself in the line of inheriting Thrushcross Grange. He treats Isabella VERY badly. Cathrine becomes sick, gives birth to a daughter[which they named Cathrine] and died. Heathcliff is desperate for her soul to stay on earth so he begs her to haunt him and not leave him alone. Isabella runs away to london and gives birth to a son, and named him Linton, and keeps him there. Thirteen years pass, all while Nelly takes care of Cathrines daughter. She is just like her mother, but with a better attitude. she grows up without knowedge of Wuthering Heights, until one day she wanders and meets Hareton ands they play. Isabella dies, and Linton comes to live with Heathcliff, and he treats Linton worse then he treated Isabella. Cathrine and Linton eventually become married, in which was Heathcliffs plan, so he could inherit Thrushcross Grange....Edgar dies, Then Linton dies, and Heathcliff gets the Grange and makes Cathrine be a servant. Thats where Nellys story ends when its catches up to present. Lockwood, after hearing that story, quickly leaves Thrushcross Grange. He comes back after a while to visit Nelly. She has new stuff to add. Cathrine falls in love with Hareton, Heathcliff became upsessed with Cathrines ghost, and shortly after a night walking on the moors, died. Hareton and Cathrine get married and inherit Wuthering heights.

My Philosophy

I believe in the creation theory. Only I don’t think it’s a theory, I say it’s a fact. I choose to believe that we don’t come from monkeys.




Why do I believe this? Because the first chapter in the first book of the Bible tells me where I came from…and it’s not from monkeys! We were created by God. Because He loves us.



The world is to awesome to be made just by chance, or randomly. Somebody had to set things in motion. Earth didn’t just happen to explode into a big ball of rock and lava. Water didn’t just happen to appear on the said rock and lava.



**If the big bang theory is real, then okay, but where did the gases come from that made the big bang? If evolution is real, then okay! But where did the small germ things come from, that turned into other things that turned into a monkey that turned into us???**

Jane Eyre

Jane Eyre is a story about a young girl who was an orphan and lived with her Uncles family. her uncle died, leaving her with her mean aunt and her children. Her aunt never liked her, and lets her children (John, Eliza and Georgiana) are allowed to be completely terrible to Jane without consequences. The trouble starts when, John was being really mean and Jane retaliates. She gets in trouble but he does not. through a series of events Jane is sent to a school for girls. There she makes a friend named Helen. She makes the school interesting, And comforts Jane whenever she is feeling down. Mr. brocklehurst (the main guy at the school) is rich but yet he makes the students stay in cold damp rooms. Soon sickness comes to the school, and even though Jane doesn't get sick, Helen does. She dies in Jane's arms:(. after, a few nice, wealthy people donate money to help make a better school building. Jane completes her school years there and even teaches for a while. She then later becomes a governess of thornfield to teach a young french girl. She then meets a nice man named Mr. Rochester. they spend lots of time together. Then she receives word, from her aunt, that her cousin John committed suicide, and she had a heart attack and asks for Jane. Her aunt doesn't want to make nice, but she gives her a letter from her uncle that her aunt withheld from her, stating that her was gonna leave Jane all his money upon his death. She then returns to thorn field, and tells Mr. rochester that she loves him, and in return he proposes to her. After a month of courting, she has an incident where this girl comes in and rips her wedding veil in half. During their wedding, a man and his lawyer say Mr rochester cannot marry jane because He is already married. He admits it, and tells jane that his wife is a madwoman, and he keeps her in an attic. He wants to move to france but she refuses since they cannot be husband and wife. she then leaves thornfield. She leaves her money behind by accident. she then lives as a poor person barely surviving until she meets the River's. they are two sisters and a brother. Jane becomes friends with the sisters, but the brother(whos name is St. John) is quiet and reserved. They eventually are able to speak easily, and he asks her to help at his place. She accepts. He learns who she really is and that she is rich, and reveals that her uncle is also his uncle. She is so very happy to have a family. she was going to go to india with him, but has to see Mr. rochester first. she finds his house burned down. she asks what happened and someone tells her that Rochesters crazy wife burned the house down and jumped from the roof, killing herself. Rochester saves the servants, but looses and hand and his eyesight. They are reunited, and get married and have a son.

Vacation

Over the last two weeks, My parents and I had our vacation. We pretty much went everywhere. We went to Valley forge.[[there happens to be a million deer there]] We went to the Franklin Museum in Philly. We went to D.C. and went to a couple of the museums there and saw the Washington monument and the Lincoln monument. We also spent 3 days at my Grandmothers house. But sadly it did lack Me staying up late and sleeping in....Isn't that what vacations are for? No school related stuff, sleeping in, staying up late. HA! Not for me. I'm pretty sure the latest I slept in to was 9 o clock..maybe 9:30. Hmm...I wanted to have more music on My MP3 player before we went...oh well...lol at the moment all I have on my MP3 player music wise is a Paramore CD and Jonas brothers CD...kinda sad isn't it? But how is this related to our vacation? Ah well my parents like to talk or whatever, so they don't listen to music in the car so I have to listen to the same thing over and over on my MP3 player....hmm not much different to the radio I guess....FM 97 plays the same like ten songs all the time...OH and that's another thing! Do other places outside of the Lancaster area not have radio stations???? I never seem to be able to get music any where else on the radio...well there was the one time Me and My sister were coming home from Indiana and We got country music....the rest was all fuzzy...haha that's the first time We heard honky tonkbadonkadonk...but anyway...yea I like music....I'm actually listening to a play list of mine at this very moment.....its music from WJTL...I figure that's school appropriate? Oh well....My Moms gonna read this and be like "your not supposed to listen to anything but classical"...but isn't Christan music good too??...well I guess Skillet isn't to Good to help concentration...But yeaaa i totally got off subject....We had a totally rad vacation...lol oops the 80's called they want their word back :P

How did the appeal of the world mentioned in 1st John 2:16 relate to the appeal of the forbidden fruit?

The way they are related is The appeal of the fruit and the appeal of the world wasn't made by God. The temptations and appeal to UN-Godly things are presented by Satan. Satan is always around the corner waiting to tempt us to do things that would disappoint God. He want to screw us up and get us to turn away from Jesus. His whole life is trying to mess with us and the world.

And how is all this connected to Jesus' temptation in Luke chapter 4?

The story in Luke is the one about Jesus in the desert fasting when along comes Satan and he tries to mess up Jesus. But Jesus wasnt having it and He told Satan to back off.

The way its all connected is Satan tries to mess EVERYONE up. He even had the nerve to try and mess with Jesus! He doesnt know the meaning of limits and will do ANYTHING to mess you up.

So just stay with Jesus and tell Him when Satan tries to mess with you and Jesus will take care of him. He doesnt want you to stumble just because Satan is a jerk who doesnt know when to give up.

So whenever you have bad thoughts or do something you arent exactly proud of, pray to God and He will take care of it...and in the end He will take care of that Looser Satan.

Little women

Little Women is a story about four young girls during the civil war dealing with their growth to womanhood. Jo, Beth, Amy and Meg are struggling with their mother to keep food on the table while their father is away as a doctor for the soldiers. Together they deal with growing up, love, death, new friends, new experiences, heartbreak and forgiveness. Jo was the tomboy of the family and often thought it would be easier if she was a boy. The rest were dignified young ladies that were usually on their best behavior. They all were Strong and Dependant.

It's a very good book...especially if you want some good role models.

I liked it because its relatable to almost every girl no matter what time period. The girl I am most like I believe is Jo.
It was a very good book except for one part. Some of the characters didnt marry the right people in the end **cough**Jo and Laurie**cough**.

The Hiding Place

Okay, so i just read a book a week or so ago. That book was "The hiding place". And my mom wants me to write a sort of a review about the book. So I will do the best I can, since I don't exactly know how to write a proper review I'll just write a little bit about the plots and what I liked and whatnot.

The hiding place is a book about a lady named Corrie ten Boom. She was a middle aged woman during the world war 2. She lived in Holland with her father and sister Betsie. Her father was a clock maker, and since she never fell in love and did not get married she lived and helped in the home above the shop. The building was called a Beje [bay-yay]. For a while she lived a pretty normal and quiet life. That is, until a shop across the street was raided by German soldiers because the owner was Jewish. She brought him in and made a call to her brother wilem who was hiding Jews and finding places for them to live. This was her first encounter with the "underground" and organization that helped Jews. She began asking her brother to help more and more until he couldn't anymore. So she took his place and the little Beje became the center of an entire organization in the underground that reached all over Holland. She was doing good, until she and a bunch of other people got in trouble by falling into a trap set by the Germans. They arrested her and her sister and everyone else in the beje at the time. She went to a local prison where she had a few roommates for a little while but was then sent to solitary. The food was bad, she wore the same clothes for months, and she started talking to ants. On the night of Hitlers birthday all the guards went out to celebrate and the prisoners took that to their advantage to learn about other people in the prison. Corrie learned that some of her family was released, her sister betsie was down the hall and sadly her father died 10 days into being at the prison. The guards then moved everyone at that prison to a few different prisons and finally to a concentration camp. Even though all of this bad has happened to corrie ten boom she tried to look at positive even though she wasn't able to find positive in the situations all the time. She survived the war but again sadly, her sister betsie did not.

I liked this book, because I like history and true stories. Corrie ten Boom was brave and stood for what she believed in. She even witnessed to her fellow prisoners about God whenever she could. She kept faith in God even through her hardest struggles.

popcorn rocks

Okay so my dad is a truck driver and he goes all over the country and even to Canada sometimes....so sometimes he brings back something interesting. A week or so ago he brought home these rocks called popcorn rocks, and what happens is, you put the rock in a jar and cover it with white vinegar and then after a while it actually gets bigger. Well my mom and i put one of them in today and its already grown quite a bit. Soo i thought that was sorta interesting.

Not a whole lot has happened lately...its actually starting to feel a little bit like fall so that's nice. Fall is my favorite season because it isn't to cold or to hot and i like the leaves when they change color. I also like thanksgiving and Halloween [thanksgiving 'cause i get to see family and Halloween 'cause of the candy]. Oh and school just started for a lot of people...not me though i started a few weeks ago...actually my one friend Ashley doesn't start until next Tuesday so shes lucky.

okay so this is my first blog...unless you count one post on my myspace blog....and a few on Xanga....BUT thats beside the point:].
I figured that since everybody else has a blog i would make one too....and plus i have to for school.


soo yea im really bored cause i cant go outside, so i am listening to Bon Jovi in surround sound! awesome right? so many things you can do when your home alone....normally my mom would probably make me turn it down...so yea pretty amazing:]]
